Metamorphoses by Ovid

I bought this book many years ago, and I'm not sure I ever believed I would (or could) read it.

I also don't think I understood what it was about.  If asked, I would have said it was an epic Roman poem.  Which is true, given that it was written by Ovid, a Roman poet, during the first century AD.

But the poem's stories are almost entirely of Greek mythology.  It's actually one of the most definitive sources on Greek mythology.

I also would have been surprised with how easy it was to read.  Albeit in English translation (this one by David Raeburn), the poetry is inviting, page-turning and thoroughly entertaining.

It provides a panoramic view of Greek (and some Roman) mythology.  I feel like I'm finally understanding Greek mythology with some basic authority.

And it's exactly the type of volume that motivates me to continue learning to read Latin.  One day I hope to re-read Metamorphoses in the original, along with countless other books by the great Romans.
