Jefferson the President, Second Term, 1805-1809 by Dumas Malone

I don't have much to add on Volume V in this six part series by Dumas Malone.  It was perhaps the most challenging in the series for me, as it covers Jefferson's difficult second term which was highly politicized and features his decline from the world stage.

The most enjoyable - and enduring - highlight from Jefferson's second term, of course, was the Louisiana Purchase.  I've obviously known if this historic acquisition for many years, and I particularly its perspective on the world stage, involving Napoleon and European affairs.

But while reading about the Louisiana Purchase it occurred to me that it impacts me in a highly personal way: I was born within the territory Jefferson acquired from France.  That brought it home for me.

I'm really looking forward to Volume VI in the series, with Jefferson out of the presidency where I believe he really shines.  His life as a thinker, philosopher and founder of the University of Virginia appeal much more to me than his life in office.

And from what I know of the man I think he would agree.
