The Greater Journey - Americans in Paris - by David McCullough

As expected, another fascinating book by the great David McCullough.  I downloaded this so long ago that I didn't even remember having it.

But with our trip to Greece behind us and our trip to France less than a year away, The Greater Journey seemed the perfect book to begin to weave the French experience into my reading.  And it was.

As McCullough points out early on, not all pioneers travelled west.  The Greater Journey highlights dozens of Americans who travelled east, to Paris, early in their lives and careers, for education and inspiration.

Many did so in the 19th century, the time period of McCullough's focus.  Artists, physicians, engineers, inventors, writers and those from many other pursuits included Paris on their roadmap to success.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Samuel F.B. Morse, John Singer Sargent, Elihu Washburne, Mary Cassatt and countless others are detailed throughout the book.  Each of their stories told masterfully as only David McCullough could.

And now I'm officially working towards our trip to France, our first, hopefully, of many to come.
