The Odes of Pindar

In a rare admission of failure, I simply couldn't make it all of the way through this book of odes by Pindar.  I found it interesting, but not accessible enough to finish it all of the way through.

Pindar's Odes were poetic tributes to victors at the Olympic games, the writing of which were typically commissioned by the families of the victors.

The language is beautiful, even in English translation, but the coded references are beyond my ability to understand.  A year ago I wouldn't have been surprised by this, but after my recent study of Greek myth I'm surprised that Pindar was still so out of reach.

I'm better for having made the attempt.  Now onward.
