This wonderful, short novel provided a nice break from the WWII histories I've been reading lately. And although I didn't really know it before I started, it fit in wonderfully with my exploration of the time period between the world wars. It takes place in the 1950s, but centers on one man's recollections of the period between the wars.
The book's language reads effortlessly, with every sentence written in English of perfect rhythm and cadence. It reminded me of the best of Jane Austen.
And even the message of the novel, the importance of looking forward in life, especially as one ages, seemed especially appropriate. Don't dwell on your past mistakes; focus on how lucky you are and the opportunities for the present and future.
Simply a wonderful little novel.
