A Farewell To Arms by Ernest Hemingway

As previously noted I'm much more of a non-fiction reader than fiction.  And although I did enjoy this classic by Hemingway - often cited as his best - my preference for non-fiction holds true after completing it.

As anticipated, the book did add real color to my understanding of WWI, with its depiction of real life in Italy during the War.

But I'm perplexed by what others have said, that the book includes some of the all-time best written depiction of battle, when the book barely depicts any.

I know I must compensate for a full century's remove from the time period, and the significant development of the novel form in the interim.

I appreciate and respect the book as a classic of its time, but in the modern context it's difficult for me to give it such high marks.  Perhaps the fault is mine.
