The Green Mile by Stephen King

I needed a solid beach-read for my annual trip to Puerto Rico, and this King novel had the highest rating on the Kindle store, so it made perfect sense.  I remember watching the movie during its heyday and wondering what all of the fuss was about.  I guess the book really is better than the movie.

And just like The Stand and The Shining, The Green Mile makes me think how much better of a novelist King is than I ever would have guessed before reading his books.  To me he's not the master of suspense, or even horror, but rather the master of psychological development.

He provides such deep, fascinating, backstories on his characters that the plot almost becomes secondary.  And unlike so many novels that I've read from others, by the end I've developed a close bond with the characters and an emotional attachment to their lives.

At his best, he really does compete with Dickens, and that means a lot coming from me.

Onward, and back to Theodore Roosevelt, who has briefly been put on hold.
