This sixth and final volume of Malone's Jefferson And His Time represents a turning point in my study of history. Bringing to a close my reading of books on the American Revolution and early American history, I now set my sights forward towards the Civil War and beyond, virgin territory in my studies.
Having said about as much as I have to say about Jefferson, he will remain to me one of the most influential figures in American, even Western, history. Partly this is due to the fact that his influence lies at the very foundation of our nation, but also because of his steadfast, persistent devotion to the cause of freedom and democratic principles.
Jefferson's personal motto, embossed on the cover of each book in Malone's series, broadly explains his approach to democracy: Rebellion to Tyrants is Obedience to God.
And his personal pursuit of lifelong learning and discovery mirrors my own desire to keep exploring. Perhaps that's why his life and story resonates so deeply with me.
Onward.
