New, Old Quotes

I just ran across some old notes of mine scribbled in a notebook in my study, including the following quotes.  The latter two obviously speak to my deep love of history, and why it transcends mere enjoyment, instead becoming something of great importance:

"Make yourself the sort of man you want people to think you are."
By Socrates, from Xenophon, Memorabilia, II, 6, 39, as quoted by Cicero from his On Duties

"The further backward you look, the further forward you can see."
By Winston Churchill

"The greatest stimulus to progress and belief in a future is knowledge and understanding of the past."
By John Boardman, Chapter 12, Greek Art & Architecture, in The Oxford History of the Classical World, page 278
