On Originality

"Only lunatics can be completely original."

Will Durant, The Age of Faith (Volume IV of The Story of Civilization), page 257

I just read this quote and quietly chuckled to myself. The context is a deep discussion on Moslem philosophy of the tenth century, in particular the works of Avicenna. The quote defends Avicenna in his borrowings from Aristotle and others that preceded him, just as Aristotle built upon Plato.

Aside from its obvious humor, I take comfort in the quote, as it reminds me that we don't have to carve a completely new path to be wise or achieve fulfillment. We only need to build upon that which we have learned and experienced.
